30 hours with two, 6 week old Labrador/Shepherd mix puppies was… humbling.
With five adult dogs, two guinea pigs, three chickens, a full time job, part time college and every other tidbit that is life also on our plates – adding those two was an insane thing to do. I admit that. But I still wanted to try.
They sure were cute.
They were so needy. So full of excrement. So whiny. So scratchy and bitey. They slept in 30 minute increments, and seemed to be awake all night long.
But still, so cute.
I realized how valuable sleep is, and how nice it is to have adult dogs.
It was humbling to recognize that my capacity for caring for dogs is pretty much limited to those who are not 6 weeks old. Or 8 weeks old. Or 30 weeks old. That dream experience I had planned for myself, to foster a pregnant dog, well… that went right out the window. Not anytime soon, at least.
